Eating Healthy On a Budget

You don’t have to sacrifice nutrition or flavor to save money on food. Use these tips to help plan and prepare low-cost, healthy meals and snacks.

  1. Plan your weekly meals ahead of time, including lunches.
  1. Take advantage of store specials. Check store flyers or mobile apps as you plan your menu for the week. You can “clip” digital coupons in the apps.
  1. Create a shopping list based on your menu plan, and stick to it. Take advantage of your store’s grocery pickup service, if available, to prevent impulse buys.
  1. Stock your spice cabinet so you can add flavor to the inexpensive food staples listed below.

  1. Avoid processed and convenience foods. Whole foods are cheaper and healthier.
  1. Buy in bulk for long-lasting items. Stock up on canned goods and meat to freeze when they are on sale.
  1. Choose fruits and vegetables that are in season, or buy frozen produce.
  1. Use grocery store loyalty cards for extra savings.

  1. Prepare ingredients yourself. A few extra minutes spent washing, chopping, and seasoning can save several dollars.
  1. Make extra and freeze or store leftovers so you can cook once and eat twice.
  1. Add inexpensive ingredients like beans, whole grains, or extra vegetables to stretch meat dishes.
  1. As you clean up the kitchen, put leftovers in single-serving containers. The next day’s lunch is ready to go!
